Iwate — Azuma Farm

Azuma Farm Koiwai, the first outpost of Adrian Zecha’s new venture, opened in April on an 8-hectare pocket within the wider 2,000-hectare Koiwai Farm estate in Iwate, a landscape regenerated over more than a century from volcanic ash into mixed woodland. Designed by Shiro Miura of Kyoto-based Rokkakuya, the architecture uses timber sourced directly from the estate, conceived to sit quietly within the forest rather than shape it. The all-inclusive property offers two accommodation types, Forest Villas and more secluded Garden Villas, alongside farm-led cuisine and dedicated sauna pavilions with wood-fired saunas and cold baths.
Less a hotel, more a controlled immersion in landscape, very much in keeping with Zecha’s current thinking. My full review out later this year.
