Aman — Seoul and Indonesia
Aman has announced its first property in South Korea, another large-scale urban mixed-use development, this time in Cheongdam, Seoul. The 38-storey project will combine an Aman hotel with 49 branded residences, an Aman Club, spa and wellness facilities, restaurants, retail and cultural spaces, overlooking the Han River.
There is little here that feels especially new for Aman. Another tower, another club, another collection of residences: the standardisation of a brand once defined by places that could hardly be replicated continues at full speed.
Indonesia, one of the last bastions of the old Aman ethos, is evolving too. The Amanjiwo Residences are nearing completion above the original Ed Tuttle resort; at Amandari, I hear the much-loved library is to be converted into a Mediterranean restaurant; Amankila now has its own Arva, Aman’s ubiquitous Italian restaurant concept; and the monkeys that have long been part of the Amanwana experience are apparently to be removed. Progress, apparently. Sigh.
