Meet Philippe Servais, Editor-in-Chief of The Gallivanter’s Guide

From Amankila's Library to Editor-in-Chief

The Gallivanter’s Guide lay open on a polished teak table in Amankila’s serene library, afternoon light drifting through the shutters. It was 1995, and I was already enthralled by exceptional hotels—a passion born of childhood travels to some of the world’s finest properties.

But this was different. Here was a publication that spoke in a sharper, truer voice: honest, unsentimental, refreshingly free of the marketing gloss that clouded so much travel writing. I became hooked, soon a loyal subscriber, and year after year its pages shaped how I thought about hospitality. That Amankila—one of the world’s most discerning resorts—chose to showcase it so prominently only confirmed its authority.

Nearly two decades later, founders Lyn Middlehurst and David Maslin invited me to join their team. What began as a discovery in a quiet Balinese library became a calling. Today, I lead the publication they created in 1991, carrying forward its uncompromising principles: complete editorial independence, no advertising, no sponsorships.

Because when you are spending thousands on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you deserve reviews written by someone who truly cares about extraordinary places—not someone paid to praise them.
